Kim Martinod is an assistant professor in the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, at KU Leuven in Leuven. Her research group, part of the Center for Molecular and Vascular Biology, focuses on the interplay between thrombosis and inflammation in cardiac disease, specifically the role of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) in the development of heart failure. NETs can play a pathological role in human disease. Studies in animal models show a protective effect of PAD4-deficiency in acute (thrombo)inflammatory settings as well as more chronic settings including cardiac fibrosis. She is also the current chair of the Vascular Biology Subcommittee of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis.
