Graduated medicine at the University of Antwerp, Belgium in 2003. PhD at the University of Groningen in 2007. Cardiology training at the University Medical Center Groningen. Post-doc (NWO-Rubicon grant) on population genetics and epidemiology of AF at Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital and the Framingham Heart Study. Steering committee member/PI of multiple investigator-initiated clinical studies regarding AF and/or HF (RACE, CONVERT, RACE II, RACE3, RACE4, RACE V, RED-CVD, MARC, VIP-HF, RACE 7-ACWAS, DUTCH-AF, AF-RISK, Young-AF, Biomarker-AF, RACE X, EHRA-PATHS, REPEAT-AF). Research focuses atrial fibrillation (AF) and heart failure (HF), to improve treatment, understand contemporary epidemiology, unravel underlying genetics, and improve risk prediction. He was Task Force coordinator for the European Society of Cardiology 2024 guidelines on management of AF.
